Ok I have DMd in the far...far distant past...30 years ago. I got a group of new players together who absolutely loved the game and LMOP.
They want to now carry on with existing characters in a new campaign.
I am about to get the new Players and DMs books.
How do I go about the following-
1- How we go about transferring from the old characters to the 2024 version, so they can carry on with the characters they love? Is there a method to it?(I havnt read the new books yet)
2- As a DM, what would you consider the most important changes in the game...is there a section on it?
1) I'm afraid if you're looking for a magic toggle that you flip and it automatically switches the characters from 2014 to 2024 I'm afraid you're out of luck, if you want to change you basically need to start again from scratch and build the characters up one level at a time. If you are doing this be aware they moved ability point increases from species to background and limited which you can have to three specific ones per background so you might need to manually play around with stats to get them back to what they have at the moment
2) To be honest there's not a huge amount of change to the actual rules, the new DMG is a much more user friendly experience to read and might actually be something that can help people learn to be a DM but the actual rules are fairly similar. The biggest changes are that some of the spells and feats work differently so keep an eye out for that and the players have a general level of power creep where 2024 characters will hit harder than the 2014 versions so you might need to adjust your encounters

It has to be done by hand, but at their level, it's not much of a pain.
There are two basic approaches, and both work:
(This assumes you're doing it on the site.)
Make a new character from scratch, copying the choices you made when possible.
Copy the character for backup purposes, then delete the old class levels and add new levels in the updated class. Then update species and background. (Or don't; it really doesn't make much difference to keep using the old ones.)
In either case, you may need to make sure the legacy toggle is on for wizards and clerics, because not all of their 2014 subclasses have yet been updated.
