Hey everyone! I’ve been DMing for several years now, and one of the things that keeps me coming back to the table week after week (despite the torture some of my campaigns put me through) is watching how player arcs evolve; especially the ones that catch me by surprise.
I've seen some wild stuff unfold just because a player committed to a little growth and vulnerability, not all of them good. For example, right now I'm watching a Paladin in my weekly Wednesday campaign slowly break his oath a bit more every time a fellow party member talks him into stealing some honey mead, or sweet talks him into something more nefarious. This is definitely an unfolding moral dilemma that's going to bite him soon (he's very good at ignoring the warning signs from his deity).
What about you? What’s your favorite character arc you’ve either played or witnessed? Bonus points if it started off as a joke and turned into something meaningful <3 I'm sure we've all had a few of those.
I had a 1e Assassin, who went on missions, killed for rewards, betrayed his (NPC) masters and went on the run. This character was the sole survivor of a couple of adventuring parties, was part of a couple others and slowly came around to becoming an adventurer and later a hero. When the TPK happened the DM looked at me and said he was certain I was going to run from the hopeless battle, but the ex-assassin had finally found comrades he wouldn't desert no matter what.
