English is not my native language, so no hard feelings on my grammar.
Hello there, i started my first game a couple weeks ago. Although i had no expirience in dnd itself, i have a 5~ years of RolePlaying in other forms like RolePlaying using online games such as Starbound, WOW etc. Our table is composed of GM and 2 players who played a couple sessions/campaigns and me with another guy, both of us first-timers. All exept me are old friends, i was invited because of my growing interest in DnD.
Our story started on a ship. Everyone stated what they were doing and we started RPing our acquaintances (Getting to know each other.) To my surprise, other newbie chose not a human, but a tiefling. So i thought we will have something rather interesting. So in two games we had one glaring issue. The second newbie was really distracted and quiet. Always on his phone. I don't mind mediocre RolePlay, not knowing what to do, but what usualy help with that? Trial and help from others. So we've been nice to the guy, told him that he can ask about whatever he wanted, just act like his char would.
So one time we've had enough and told him that WE are playing with him, we want him to do something, say something, anything. He wasn't a quet character, he was rather genle warrior and when we got anything out of him, he acted like a royalty. I don't mind to put things blutly and told him that his character have to do anything. Saying "I ate a meal and made a shelter" everytime GM says that it's time to make a camp is just not enough. And response was as expected. Guy started a long unnecessary, over the top RP about him rising with the sun and waching my character sit on a tree. We all said that we get it and he was forever quiet, even then GM said that his character was on a verge of death, how much injuries he have after the battle. No response. Good as new.
And even if he was all tactical i would've understand, but no, in combat he just rushes the enemy, wich ends with him nearly dead.
In second game session i came up with "good" idea and tried to steal a valuable item from him. His talking magic sword after a big fight, thinking that he will act on my character's behaviour, maybe it would make him care about something and give him some momentum.
So i wanna hear your opinion on the matter. How do we make a player play the game. We tried the "Maybe it's not for you" thing, but he is confident that we wants to play with us and everything is ok. We are all having fun, but that figure in the corner is really distracting.
