I’ve DM’d a couple times before, and I really wanted to use a pre-made world to help with creating a story for my players. However, I know that Ravnica is from Magic: The Gathering, and although I’ve played a little, I don’t know much about its lore. So I wanted to know if it’s possible to dm a campaign without knowing a ton of the lore. I definitely don’t want to ignore it all, but I also just don’t know how far I should research before starting a campaign in that universe. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read this.
As long as you know the basic ideology of guilds and that the world is basically one large city, shouldn't be a problem. Just set your campaign close to the rubble belt, and you can get away with almost anything.
Knowing more about Ravnica is certainly helpful to running the setting accurately, but as long as you are consistent, you can run the setting however you like and it be similar to a homebrew setting (just might be confusing to people who know Ravnica better).
Yeah I have one person who knows Magic once the group, I’ll ask them what they know and how much they’d be comfortable with me knowing/making up!
This was what I was going to say the key is. If I was in your game, I wouldn't even know what you were making up and what was in the book :) So if you have a player or players who know the world well and really care about things being 'right', you'll want to square with them so they don't get in a hizzy.
And then, even if your player is cool with you making things up, still be prepared for times when you'll say X, and they'll say "Wait, that's not right, it's Y". That'll happen just because they know the world well and it'll pop out before they remember that you're making things up :) If you're my Star Wars DM and you say "Now that Palpatine is dead, the new government is on Alderaan", I'm going to say "what?!" before I even think about it. If the player is cool with it, you can just smile and say "Yeah, this is one of those things that's different", and then they say "Oh yeah, cool", and you're all good.
Have players who know the world better than you do help you with things you aren't clear on. Be clear with the players that this is your version of Ravnica and it will vary from the "official" one. Relax and have fun running the game.
I was thinking of using Nicol Bolas! But the cult of yore is another good one, although the beginning will mainly be small time baddies, overall I’m pretty sure Nicol will be there

Thanks, I was worried that I bought the book and map pack a bit too hastily 😅 I appreciate if

If the group composition can't make another guild the overarching villain, then I suggest going with either Nicol Bolas or the Cult of Yore.

Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)
