I have this character who is a descendant of one of the legendary Knights of Myth Drannor. She is the distant descendant and inheritor of the soul of Illistyl Elventree.
I have this idea for the character, that she is guided by her ancestor. When she was 12, she was guided to a shrine of Sune (although the character did not know and still does not know that her ancestor is guiding her), where Illistyl was able to use the mirror of Sune, to awaken the characters soul and magical potential - turning her from an ordinary child, suffering from gender dysphoria, into an Acolyte of Sune and setting on the path to becoming a hero.
Since then, I am imagining the soul of Illistyl Elventree - now residing in the body of the character - has manipulated the characters dreams on several occasions, to show the character glimpses of possible futures.
Essentially guiding her on her journey by putting her in the right place at the right time to learn and grow as an individual, an adventurer and a hero.
Just curious what you guys think of this because I am not sure whether it is too ott or not.
You are putting a lot of pressure on yourself and on the DM with a back story like this: on your side you might end up feeling the DM is not giving enough "visions" to make you feel they are taking into account your back story; on the DM side you "force" them in always keeping in mind you might have these visions, wonder how much is enough and always try to think ahead to possible outcomes you might get a vision of, it's A LOT of work and pressure.
The idea itself is not bad, just very demanding on both sides for a TTRPG. It feels more like the back story of the protagonist of a novel, rather than the member of a TTRPG party.

A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
