When you multi class why do you need to have 4 levels in each class to gain a Ability Increase or a Feat? Surely its your max level that counts?
Example: 5th Lvl Paladin & 3rd Lvl Warlock is a total of 8th level it should then gain the Ability increase or Feat, yet it does not. I notice that these gains are now done at lvl 4 - 8 - 12 etc...
Is there anyway of overriding this or is it just the consequence of multi-classing? Any other advice too?
It is intended to keep multiclassing from being too strong (it is already very strong). Additionally, classes don't gain any extra features at those levels, so it is part of game balancing too. Then there is the fact that fighters and rogues get extra ASIs compared to other classes and how that would work.
It would simply be impossible to balance that and it would mean that anyone not multi-classing would be at a major disadvantage. For example, I have 3 levels in one class and decide to put 1 level in fighter. I now get a fighting style, second wind AND a feat/ASI. Whereas anyone not multi-classing only gets a feat/ASI.

That’s one of the consequences of multi classing and it’s one of the reasons I prefer to stick with a single class.

Basically, the game was just designed this way.
It would simply be impossible to balance that and it would mean that anyone not multi-classing would be at a major disadvantage. My advice, instead of focusing too much on what you’re not getting, focus on what you did get by multi classing. It has benefits too.
