If I were to play a wizard as a battlefield strategist type (War Wizard), what would your suggestions be for the most strategy/control focused spells? I'm thinking of taking minimal damage spells, like some cantrips and maybe an upcastable Cromatic Orb, and then the rest going for full on control.
Hypnotic Pattern and Slow are two of my favorite battlefield control spells. Other than that, Grease, Darkvision and Mage Armor are non-concentration spells that you can cast while you're concentrating on other spells. Hideous Laughter is a great single target spell as long as the target fails it's saving throw. It's a damaging spell too, but Tidal Wave has a control effect too and Sleet Storm has an absolutely huge area of effect for keeping a number of targets out of combat until they escape from it's area.
When I played a wizard like that, I usually thought of filling different niches. Make sure you've got level-appropriate single-target control, multi-target control, area denial, etc. Make sure you've got something appropriate for smart and something appropriate for dumb monsters and humanoids.

What do you think?
What level will you be playing at? Is this for dungeon exploration or set location defense/offense?

I'm just spitballing, no actual campaign, so let's assume a mid-level combat defense /offense

Darkness can break line of sight. Faerie Fire prevents invisibility. Hold person/monster are good. Sleep, entangle, etc. And any lingering AoE spell like cloudkill creates area denial.
