I have a Horizon Walker Ranger who has made it his calling to protect the realm/material plane from other-worldly evils.
In his backstory, he was basically subjected to the "hurled through hell" spell and saw unimaginable atrocities which really effed with his mind. It was so impactful that he made it his life calling to protect the world from what he saw.
However, he only reason he wasn't completely lost to what he saw is because in the midst of incomprehensible evil he saw goodness shine through the dark. He saw the Platinum Dragon, Bahamut, in the distance caught up in an epic fight against the forces of hell. His scales glimmered ever so bright even in the darkest of places. This gave him hope that good was not completely lost.
Now what I need help with is incorporating Bahamut into a greater quest for my character. He's no paladin or cleric because he feels his service is due to the cause of good in general rather than to a specific deity. That is not to say he doesn't have a deep reverence and respect for Bahamut, he is what gave him hope and dare I even say saved his soul from corruption.
I want to eventually have my character and Bahamut have an encounter and make a case for Bahamut to gift him with some ability or item that will aid him in his cause.
I guess I want to know how sensible all this sounds from someone else's perspective. Yeah, I'm trying to make my character freaking powerful and go on awesome adventures but it needs to have the right flow to it.
I think that sounds awesome! You definitely don't NEED to be a cleric or a paladin or a warlock to have some sort of god/patron/entity that inspires and guides you (even if indirectly). I think a lot of how this plays out will depend on your DM and how they handle your personal storyline. I'd be curious to see what sort of hooks or side events could be incorporated into your campaign to eventually guide you back to Bahamut. Should these moments all relate back to the story initiated by that initial encounter? Or are they separate incidents, only tied together by the influence of Bahamut and/or his followers? From both a narrative and mechanical balance perspective, it may actually make sense for the "gift" to be in the form of you choosing to multi-classing a few levels of cleric or paladin.

The "Haunted One" background could be a nice little way of incorporating rules into the lore of this character.
