As with most people that got in early in D&D, it has been a huge part of my life. Of course, there were ons and offs, ups and downs, but it has stuck around.
For the last several years, it's been the Age of Offs, for the D&D part at least. My life changed, I've gotten married to the girl that burned entire forests in our adventures, and made my DM life particular kind of hell. We now have two lively sons, which brings me to my current topic.
There's a wish… no, a strong desire perhaps is more accurate within all of us to share the things we love with people we love. This becomes totally different level when we think of ourselves sharing the things we love with our offspring. I would know, since today I've had the pleasure and privilege to teach our elder son, Theodore and witness his first steps into the adventuring world of D&D.
He is a 4 year old twerp with a strong love for everything written. It fascinates him quite a bit. So we gifted him with ABCs of D&D book, and after reading it with him briefly explained to him what are adventures and how can we use our imagination to experience all sorts of things.
Today, we got from work regularly and spoke about how it would be great to organize a session with our friends. Theo overheard us and said he wanted to try an adventure as well. So after our youngest went to sleep I brought a map and several figurines to try and start with simple encounters.
We fought together, side by side, as a father and son! Against the sleepy bears who love hugging, and hungry wolves who wanted to eat our shoes! Battles were hard and long but each time we prevailed by whipping the wolves bottoms to get them to wait for food, and singing the bears to sleep!
IT WAS MAGICAL! I can't even begin to explain the feeling and the glow in my sons eyes while we "fought" together.
Thank you D&D for this additional magic in my life, and thank you D&D Beyond for getting me back into the game!
Ah this is great! I’m having a similar experience with my (soon to be 4yo) daughter.
I bought the ABCs of D&D too and she just started asking loads of questions about the different characters and creatures. Next up, she’s looking at the pictures in my campaign books 😟 Aboleths and Myonids don’t scare her. She just keeps asking.
So I bought her the new young adventurers books. I still think they are a bit beyond her but she loves the pictures and the stories.
Last Saturday we created her Toby the Tortle character. We didn’t do anything with her (Toby is a she), we just talked about where she lived and what she does.
It went up a notch this week when she was asked what she wanted to dress up as for a preschool event and she replied: Dragonborn.
