I think I must have missed a discussion on this topic so would love a link. I also do not want to offend anyone but...Is there a DnD "GO" like ap in the works? This is a must do Wizards of the Coast! I think it was the first thing we all thought of when the popular "monster catching" game came out last year...a party could be created, level up and defeat monsters as you explore your town or city. I am sure everyone has ideas so I would like to keep this thread for the rumors of yes or no, WotC is or is not working on it. Or a link to an already in progress discussion here or elsewhere on line. Thanks! (Found one discussion on Reddit.)
I'm not sure a "Go" style game would work for D&D. One thing would be balance something that Pokemon Go is really bad at with things like needing to beat gyms to get coins / or buying them with real money and using said coins to buy incubators hatch eggs or spamming Lucky eggs to level up like crazy . Meaning D&D Go would quickly become Pay to win
Another issue I can see is the amount of updates and phone space it would require in one year Pokemon Go had 5 main updates Speed cap, Flee Rate, Ditto, and Gen Two. A ton of events Easter, Winter, Halloween, water, and the current Fire/Ice one. What events would a D&D Go have?
The issue now is everyone who started last year falls into two category the Level cap at 40 with nothing else to do or Pokemon limit where excluding region locks they have everything. So what happens when in D&D Go you hit level 20 ?
I can see why the idea of meting up with friends to play would be fun but then why not just play D&D at home, or LARP ? It just seems like a unnecessary risk to me
I like the idea, but it would have to work in an Adventurer's League framework. Like maybe you could have a "quest" to go and visit a remote location or find a thing, and doing so would give you a benefit in the next session, or what have you. Could be a neat thing to do.
I think this is a huge winner, I just came to the realization myself and started looking around - knowing I ciuldbco be the first to think of it. But I really hope whoever puts the code to this doesn't make it like PGO - add actual progression, and something to achieve. People are going to put in obscene amounts of time to get ahead, why hamper them?
Real leveling, none of that wait time shit in other apps. I think a simple DnD platform with an LFG function for dungeon crawling and smaller solo encounters would build the best platform. Apply the best of what we've learned from MMOs to balance power leveling. And my two cents, since I haven't seen anyone say it yet: make malls the big dungeons, like throw a dragon in Nordstrom's, can you imagine?
And hopefully they don't put in any microtransactions, and keep ads minimal and relevant. If you could nail an augmented reality bit for the players avatar, you could sell cosmetic skins/hairdos/tabards. Or maybe even backpacks/inventory space - whatever doesn't affect combat or leveling. Throw in some side profession mini games or player to player gambling? Party to party dueling?
The infrastructure and initial investments needed might be too much for Wizards. Pokemon Go is built on Ingress, which was originally built and launched by Google before Niantic was spun off. I'd rather Wizards put money in keeping good content in existing formats than a high risk mobile game that may be too late market-wise.
This has been the only thread I have found about this. If there are more, please send me pointers. Nothing you have talked about here so far is unfixable. As a product designer, this idea is really starting to get my attention. First, I think that as a first release we could do a matching mechanism rather than a single person mode. Monetization could come from several sources. The rules and stats already exist so the mechanics are mostly complete. I have built applications with less information pre-planned than this. hmmm...
Another of my old and first posts to pop up again after nearly a year of inactivity. Thanks for writing and giving hope in your experience from product design. I for one do not see a problem from a lack of content issue. I know I would have fun creating a character, leveling up to max and then starting again at 1st level. I think too many players are afraid to retire a character and start at level one again...I hope there are many like me who are excited to try different classes and races if that was something that would translate well in a "GO" version of D&D...
Imagine you start as a Enchanter Wizard whose goal is to find Halaster's lost 'pets' around the world. You have a set of spells, Charm Monster, Enthrall, Imprison and Teleport Circle, and you get rewards for 'catching', 'containing' and 'returning' them.
Find Mind Flayers in the libraries. Find Orcs and Hobgoblins in your local gym. Find Merrow and Hags at the beach or the piers. It'd be a fun little gag to have to run around with your smart-phone and be trying to capture the monsters, and the thing is they'll run up and attack you, so you'd have people holding up their phones, then make horrified faces, run back thirty steps and then turn back around and be frantically tapping at their phones while onlookers are just going "Wut?".
A good tie-in could be rather than just phone rewards, if it ties in to a online card-game that Wizards produces, going out with the phone ties in to the card game in that the monsters or NPCs you catch or convince to serve you will sometimes appear in your decks as a permanent addition to your roster, which gives people incentive to run around in the outside world to find 'boosters' to their decks, and people from around the world could be finding rare or region-unique monsters or NPCs that could then be traded online for rares or uniques from other parts of the world.
You're in Australia and New Zealand? You might be able to catch Bronze Whelplings. Be in Canada? Abominable Yetis. England? Unicorns. Having them also be seasonal 'spawns' or perhaps just randomly appearing in specific countries during specific months could also make sure that every player across the world gets their chance to catch and collect something unique or rare.
Alternatively, maybe the premise of the game is you're Halaster's Apprentice and he's tasked you with repopulating his Undermountain Dungeon, and the creatures you catch in the real world are uploaded to your personal, and randomized, version of Undermountain and are pitted against bands of adventurers from Waterdeep and creatures coming into the Undermountain from the Underdark itself. Make your dungeon dynamic, challenging and a threat to both life and limb, and Halaster won't turn you into a Gibbering Mouther or some other horror. Or he might. It's Halaster. The task is to last as long as you can by constantly altering the Undermountain and refilling and repopulating the Dungeon with as many different creatures to create a constantly changing challenge to keep the Mad Archmage amused as long as possible, hopefully until you find the means to escape the Undermountain yourself.

It would be an interesting thing, however?
