Shambling slowly towards a target, thick and heavy robes, stained a darker red than they used to be from the blood of past Victims. Striking down with either fists or a heavy hammer.
This image popped into my head and I really wanna build it.
Are you asking for a PC or villain. Villian is easy as a lot of monsters fit the description. For instance, the easy go-to here would be to take the stats for the Shambling Mound and put it into the villain you describe as a humanoid character with robes. And just apply the slam attacks to the use of a hammer. But, there are a LOT of monsters you could use for this scenario...I just can't get the term "shambling" out of my head. lol
If you are talking for a PC, I would think something like a Goliath race...unfortunately, fighter and barbarian give LOTS of movement and multiple attack advantage if you were wanting more something slow, so I'm not sure what to suggest there. I'd say just go with the barbarian. You can always nerf the character more to fit with the stats you want, but I guess it depends on what you're aiming for.
- Pick Half-Orc for the relentless endurance so you can decide not to die once a day
- Pick Paladin as starting and main class for heavy armor, martial weapons, self-heal, self-buff and Aura of passing saves at level 6
- Pick Oath of Conquest so you can use Channel Divinity for Fear and get Armor of Agathys and Spiritual Weapon
- Add 3 levels of Hexblade Warlock, Pact of the Blade, Agonizing Blast and Improved Pact Weapon for 2H weapon. Now you can kill with your Charisma both up close and at range
- If you want, mix in a single level of Shadow Sorcerer. Now you have shield if your Plate AC is too low and Absorb Elements if you fail on a save. And when you die you can make a Cha saving throw not to die... probably with the Bonus of your awesome Paladin aura.
All in all this comes online at level 12, but from then on out you are pretty much immortal against level appropriate enemies. I would probably start with 1 level Paladin, then the first Hexblade and use a longsword with two hands (Hexwarrior does work with versatile weapons). Then go the next 7 levels paladin to get the ASIs for Cha. Two more levels of Hexblade and then maybe the Shadow Sorcerer.

Over encumbered paladin?

Thank you this sounds about like what I needed. It should be fun to try.
