So I am bored and started thinking about interesting characters so I have an idea and wanted to know from the view point of others on what you all would think of this kind of character and the inspiration behind it.
So I know you can't really play an immortal character without many issues with power, mechanics, ect and I recently had an idea looking over the revived rogue with the past lives concept, how ghosts can posses, ect... what if the character was a soul for some reason unable to pass onto any plain so they find bodies to posses after their old one fades forcing them to adapt to being that person for awhile so not to raise suspicion or maybe they don't care and live as they wish? This would also open a lot of fun was your character could think compared to a normal character, say what if you were an ancient being from one of the planes but you were banished from said plane so your soul has legit nowhere to go since the one place you lived before has cast you out for good.
Now this could be cool for an evil character you could be chaotic evil spreading destruction like a misbehaved child for entertainment in your boring immortal life, maybe you are a kind soul from the pits or void saving others and watching over them, or maybe you were cast out by the other celestial and in turn you aren't evil but more neutral obsessed with humans and other mortals entertained by their obsession with the mundane while you manipulate and even help grant their greatest desires to see if they bring their own ruin or prosper?
As for a reason to stick with the party, well maybe you took an interest in the individuals and find you may get an ample amount of entertainment from traveling with them, maybe if there is a warlock in the party they secretly have a pact with you tapping into your dormant powers which could be a cool way to bring you back as they would have to find you a new body to keep the pact going? actually this could be funny since they would be the only party member knowing you are an immortal terrifying being who sees them as entertaining ants while the rest of the party sees you as that charismatic bard, that destructive brute of a barbarian, ect! This would be interesting and would be a cool way to add to RP especially if you come across a being in the campaign that would recognize you as you get into an argument older than the party leaving them confused lol.
what do you think? Would you allow something like this since it wouldn't play differently mechanically but would add a lot to RP and something fun for a DM to toy with in their stories? Maybe you could go a step further and add where when they possess the individual their eyes become snake eyes and they grow snake fangs or something identifiable more or less visually apparent even being as simple as a marking or tattoo?
This is actually pretty close to how the fae act in the RPG Shadow of the Demon Lord, which is set in a grimdark dying world. Elves and other fae have almost entirely abandoned the world, and the ones that remain have become detached, hedonistic, and frequently depraved. As their lives stretch on, they need new kicks to satisfy their urges. They find manipulating mortals to be fair game, as we're just dust in the breeze. On the other hand, not all elves of this type are evil. Some get pleasure out of creating art, song, and literature, etc. There's more to it, but that setting doesn't shy away from discussing some truly depraved acts that I wouldn't feel comfortable porting into my games. However, I find this take on elves the most believable departure from the idealized Tolkien model, and would definitely use it in D&D.
That being said, I would NOT allow a player to run this archetype if their goal is to grief the rest of the party. Chaotic neutral is often used as an excuse to be uncooperative and churlish at a table.
That sounds great actually and no I don't plan to grief the party with it lol, my plan is for him to actually side with the party because his gain is entertainment, adventure, ect. I could see him in one town helping a kind and caring peasant to the throne to help the kingdom while in the next he empowers a cruel and evil criminal to power with the intent of seeing the two sides clash through propaganda and the such. But as for being in the party at most he may re-flavor the dwarfs ale with ghost pepper equivalent or cause the party members bath water to turn green color only at worst.
Rp is only fun if everyone can find joy in it and can build off of it is how I feel, plus if someone gets annoyed by it they can always let me know outside of rp and I will stop it completely with their character. On a side note I am good about asking a DM for permission on things I feel can be a bit much effecting a campaign they made out of respect. I also usually avoid overly sexual or gruesome stuff unless I know others are okay with it and I am cool with doing it around them out of respect so none of that stuff should be an issue for me lol.
I usually play chaotic or lawful good... neutral is about the closest to evil I would ever be able to RP, I think sanguin from elderscrolls is also a fun character for ideas like the worse he does to the player character is go out getting black out drunk then laughing at the pc retracing their own steps even giving them a great reward at the end all in good fun nobody gets hurt lol.
