I'm teaching myself all the ins and outs of D&D Beyond's VTT and like to push the envelope trying to get more use out of it but in an easy-to-use/easy-to-understand manner.
One thing I've learned is that representing heights of various tokens on a map isn't supported (yet).
The hack I've come up with as a DM is to add to the flying entity's token name additional text representing its height above or below the level of the map. This is done by including at the end of the token's name a space, followed by a "+" sign (above map level) or "-" sign (below map level), and ending with the distance in feet (or meters if you're using the metric system) and a single "f" to represent "feet" (or a single "m" for "meters").
Example: An Ancient White Dragon that flies up to a height of 20 feet (7meters) would renamed as Ancient White Dragon +20f (or Ancient White Dragon +7m). If the dragon's height increases by 10 feet (3 meters) then I would change the name again but to Ancient White Dragon +30f (or Ancient White Dragon +10m). When the dragon gets back to ground level, I change the token name to remove all height references, leaving it as the original token name of Ancient White Dragon.
Does anyone have any other tips or tricks they use with the VTT to make it little easier or intuitive for players as well as DMs?

Not really a tip or trick, but now that DDB VTT Maps supports importing Animated Maps, I have been making my maps in Arkenforge, and then importing a nice animated map to make everything look better than the default static maps.
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. If you're using DnDbeyond for managing character sheets, I would always recommend AboveVTT anytime people ask this question. It's a Chrome/Firefox extension and syncs very easily with the DnDbeyond sheets. Additional benefit is if you use monster statblocks from DnDbeyond (both from content you have access to and also homebrew), you can very quickly pull those statblocks up without leaving the VTT screen. https://omegle****/

In a thread asking for tips and tricks using the DDB VTT, "Use this other VTT" doesn't seem very constructive.

"Above VTT" is not a separate VTT it is as the message says, an extension that is for the Chrome browser. It is an add on that only works with DNDBeyond.

AboveVTT is a separate VTT, it's just one that runs as an extension modifying DDB rather than as a standalone app (like foundry) or website (roll20). Also I never said "separate VTT", I said other VTT. The OP specifically asks about "D&D Beyond's VTT", not any VTT that runs with D&D Beyond. AboveVTT is as relevant to the question as roll20, foundry, or fantasy grounds.
Getting back to the question at hand, here are some tips and tricks I use:
Use the group tool on the party when exploring dungeons and the like (ie not in combat) as it makes it much quicker for the party to move around
Group riders and their mounts
Group monsters with their overlays for any monster with a persistent effect such as a beholders eye ray or any emanation effect
Make an overlay for a map effect then hide it until you need to reveal the effect
Remove monsters from initiative but leave their tokens on the map, perhaps with a coloured ring (black works well) to indicate corpses that can be looted
Op, if you can't get Beyond to do what you want, then modifying your experience with a plugin is fine. In my experiences using beyond, i have found it does not Natively do a lot of things i want it to.
I personally don't think of Plugins as Separate (meaning Standalone in this case) VTTS, while Dayd does. That is up to you to decide if it counts or not.
Unfortunately, any tips or trick i learned are out of date, so i am not sure how helpful they will be to this site specifically. One thing i can say is that Drawing a little compass-rose in one of the corners of a map so you can give descriptions of where things are using North, South, East, West, as descriptors, or a clockface using time postions. " The cultist at the 8'oclock position is casting a spell' etc.
Old DM used to give us little magic items that didn't require attunement that had no weight to count as little temp blessings, but i am not sure how she did it mechanically through the Interface, or if that still works. She used to be able to give us free feats somehow, but I she told that doesn't work the same anymore. Next time i see her online i will send her toward this thread.
