From a "lore" standpoint, I understand that it can range from crystal tapping to steampunk mechanisms, however, I'm curious how folks imagine the mechanics of actual artificed magic. Raw magical energy being focused and woven by artificial processes?
I'm trying to flesh out the "engineering" of artificial magic in a way that can account for a wide variety of spell effects. For example, I've got my DM to agree to give my steel defender a fly speed by a max altitude of 10 ft. In character I want to be able to explain why. I'm imagining that the hover effect is caused by gravitation magic which inverts a section of the energy below it - meaning that the farther from earth the drone is the less gravity it has to invert. The fall-off distance of gravitational energy is exaggerated because the mathematics of gravitational reversal are exponential. You know, hand wavy hocus pocus that at least sounds like science.
I'm also imagining that he carries a sort of "battery pack" that powers his devices - hence the need for a limited number of infusions. I failed a concentration check? Oh, the battery got knocked and broke it's connection with my Paladin's "heroism" module.

I always imagined it being very mad sciency, with lots of sparks, clouds of oddly-colored smoke, and the occasional explosion.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Bards are lesser everythings :P
