So one of my player decided to be a kaleshtar, in my game i allowed them to roleplay the quarri as aspect familiar of sorts that cant interact with anything. But they have convos between themselfs. So my player decided to use their quarri to send an instant message to their mom who was also a kaleshtar. In my mind that was too OP and i said the best I can do is a pen pall like situations where its like sending letters. I explained that the kaleshtar are linked to their spirit but the spirit divides its self not work as an internet hub. My reasoning was that illithids that are a hive mind have limitations to talk between each other, so kaleshtar shouldn't be able to have and infinite range whats app ready to go. Am i blowing this out of proportion? Should I let them do it?
"Every kalashtar has a connection to a spirit of light, a bond shared by other members of their bloodline."
But in the next paragraph it says this:
"Kalashtar can’t directly communicate with their quori spirits. Rather, they might experience this relationship as a sense of instinct and inspiration, drawing on the memories of the spirit when they dream. "
So I'd rule that all members of the family are connected to the same spirit, but they cannot actively send messages through it.
It's probably more like a Pseudodragons "Limited Telepathy". What your player wants is more like the Sending at will, although limited to family members. Depending on their family this can be a nice gimmick (only parents, old, weak, no influence, just for RP) to totally OP (big family, several mighty or influential members, some actively adventuring).
That said, a fair compromise might be to have a limited telepathic connection at will and the option to cast "Sending" once per long rest and limited to family members. You could offer the player to replace one of the race's more "boring" (because passive) traits with this. "Dual Mind" and "Mental Discipline" are imo good candidates. :-)
Edit: you could even use the telepathic connection as a story element. Like "You suddenly feel your mother and a terrifying mixture of pain, anger and fear. The sensation grows more intense and almost overwhelms your senses. You catch the image of a dark haired man with a scar across his nose, before the vision suddenly ends and you're left with an empty, unfamiliar void in your mind."
If that doesn't sent your players on a new adventure I don't know what will. :D
