I was talking with a couple friend recently, and we're talking about different kinds of games, and what their benefits are, and ultimately I'm hoping that you guys can help flesh the idea out... and as I can see it so far, the major division is based on what drives the game. The four drives are:
Player__|__DM PC_____|__World
Player Driven Games are like the Western Marches. You've got some sort of map, and the players decide where they want to go and see what adventure is there. There is not a story line that travels through the adventures. Ultimately, whatever kind of adventure the PC's want is what happens that/next session. An extra benefit is that it can have rotating DM's.
DM Driven Games are what most people think of new DM's doing. "Okay guys, today you're doing this..." Next game is whatever the DM has been inspired to do. Sometimes there's a story that runs through, but there shouldn't be an expectation for that. It's low stress, and should prevent DM burn out.
PC Driven Games are what most people think of as the Perfect Campaign. Their backstory helps write the future, and the world reacts to the players.
World Driven Games are the opposite of PC Driven Games. An Adventure Book is the best example. There's a story the players will play through, but who they are isn't super important. They react to the world.
