I suspect this is not possible, but I thought I'd better ask...
I would like to make a homebrew magic sword that can be shifted from one type of sword to another. Specifically: As a bonus action, the attuned wielder can will transform the sword from a Longsword into a Rapier.
I'm guessing that the best workaround would be to create two (or more) different magic items and equip them all so the player can select which one he wants to use at any given time.
Take a look at the Rod of Lordly Might. This item can be switched between any type of sword (*as Flame Tongue), battleaxe, or spear, among other forms. It does not incorporate these variations as action options, but rather as descriptive options.
The best option for a weapon that can do different types of damage might be to reskin something that is "versatile", so that you can choose between two different damage dice. (Quarterstaff and spear are d6/d8. Battleaxe/longsword/warhammer are d8/d10.)
Aside from that, you could give the character a magic item with "At-Will" spells that deal the correct amount of damage.

Thoughts?
Thanks.
