I'm running an adventure where my PCs are riding in a coach when an NPC hops onto the top. I know total cover doesn't allow targeting, but I'd like the players and the NPC to be able to stab at each other through the coach ceiling. I was thinking +5 AC for the cover and disadvantage on attacks because they can't see each other. Is that too restrictive? I looked at the NPC's and players' ACs and weapons and those modifiers wouldn't make it impossible to hit each other (It's like 15-20% before disadvantage). Does this sound like a good way to handle it?

This is where you can use the other cover types, half cover and 3/4 cover. (here's a link if you need a quick refresher)
