I had a idea when listing to "Rewards & Rarities - D&D 5e Treasures, Boons, & Beyond! | Nerd Immersion". They made a comment you go into the Dungeon and something eats your horse. It made me think of a items.
Potable stable.
This items is realy 2 items. The first Part is a Iron pole 4' by 2" weighing 100 pounds. that has a chains with collars on it. It also comes with a Red gem at the top that detaches. When hammered into the ground you can place the collars that resize on a animal with a int of less then 4 of large size or less you can remove the Red Gem (min 1). Once you are more then 10' from the pole A tiny hut will form around the animals pushing out all others in the radius. This will last up to a week or the Gem is brought back within the 10' of the pole. If the Gem is destory or the spell is keeped up for a week the Pole melts freeing the animals. P.S. it would make sense to put food and water near the animal while in here.
I figure this would be a way to set your mounts out side and yet not have to worry about them being killed so easily.
In my campaign, I had a cavalier fighter who focused heavily on mounted combat. He eventually had 2 mounts, a warhorse and a griffon. I made a really expensive magic item that was essentially a pokeball to let him, as an action, store the mount in their own personal interdimensional space. He had 2 pokeballs and just sent them out as needed.
This was in Tier 4 of our game so balance was already out of the window at this point so nothing was broken lol But I really like your idea for lower tier play!
