Context first, question second; My players are level 2, and managed to kill a grell in a game I'm running, and they cut off its beak, taking it along with them as a trophy. One of my players decided he wanted to use it to craft a menacing looking helmet, somewhat resembling a monstrous version of batmans cowl (they cited something from the Berserk manga, but I'm not familiar with it). My player has been extremely focused on this task, dedicating a lot of time and effort, and after rolling a natural 20 on leather-working tools I wanted to reward him with a proper home-brewed item.
I normally wouldn't allow my players to craft magic items, so I told him that it can't be game breaking, and any benefit he gains will come with a trade off, which he agreed to. I'm happy to take suggestions, though after reading about grell (and deciding that the item should tie into the creature it was made from) I have one idea in particular that I think will suit the campaign well.
'Grellmet' (requires attunement)
When a person attuned to this helmet wears it, they are affected by the condition 'blinded'', gaining 'blindsight' to a range of 60 feet.
I can't see it as game breaking, even at level 2, since while blindsight is very useful for combat in darkness, there are things that you'd be unable to do (such as reading, or relying on perception checks that rely on 'vision'). Can anyone see something gamebreaking I might have missed? I'm also unsure how to home-brew the item, and could use some advice (so far I can't get the effects to work on the unpublished version of this I have made already).
