Hello everyone. Here is a magic item I made for a character I'm playing that directly connects to their backstory. it is based off the spell shadow blade
Is it too overpowered, underpowered? Are there any changes that would make it better?
This sword is pure black, with small wisps of shadow coming off the blade.
As a bonus action, you can dismiss the sword or make it appear in your hand,
This sword deals 5d8 psychic damage and has the thrown property (range 20/60). If you drop the weapon or throw it, it dissipates at the end of your turn.
While wielding this weapon in dim light or darkness you have the following benefits:
-you have a +5 bonus to stealth checks
-you are invisible to any creature that relies on darkvision to see you.
-when you use the sword to attack a target that is in dim light or darkness, you make the attack roll with advantage.
I love drow, rogues and Chinese weapons. I mean come on, rope darts are awesome.
My current character is a drow shadow monk, with a "unique" honor code (give him some time, he's working through some stuff). He also sucks on the socialization side of interacting with all other living creatures. which is very fun to RP.
5d8 psychic damage is a lot of damage, even for a Legendary weapon. Especially for a shortsword.
At best, you'll find things like the Holy Avenger, which would do 1d6+2d10+3 (~17.5) to fiends and undead specifically. That is equivalent to 3.8d8.
For a Rogue, that's not as much of a big deal, but for a fighter with 4 attacks, that is a lot of extra damage.
As written, this should be an artifact, at the very least.
An alternative option would be to give the blade a charge that regenerates at dawn, which can be used to cast Shadow Blade at 7th level.
Basically, it would be a cool sword with stealth-based passive abilities, and then could "power-up" once per day. Maybe give it the ability to recharge itself when a condition is met, such as when the character scores a Nat 20 with the blade.
The more powerful a thing is, the more narrow its focus should be. Bonus points for encouraging the wielder to engage with the world in a consequential way.
