So, I'm trying to make a barbarian subclass that is similar in many ways to the Fighter subclass, Battle Master. One of the things I'm replicating is the 'Student of War' trait and renaming it 'Weapon Mastery', and instead of gaining proficiency in a set of Artisan's Tools, I'm trying to make it so you gain expertise in a simple weapon of your choice at 3rd level, and expertise in a martial weapon of your choice at 6th level, but nothing I've tried seems to work. Any tips? Thanks!!

The only way to do it would be a major pain in the neck, and seriously broken in terms of game balance. The most powerful magic weapons in the game max out at a +3 bonus to attack (and damage) rolls. Giving a PC using this subclass a +2 bonus to attack rolls with any weapon at 3rd level that will jump to +3 two levels later, and only continue to go up from there to an eventual +6 bonus (potentially +7 with the right magic item) would completely blow the bounded accuracy of 5e’s combat system away. I strongly suggest considering alternatives to those ideas. However, if you really want to go through with it anyway I can help you set it up. But it will seriously jack your game up if you allow it.
Thank you for the input. I hadn't considered that with the magic weapons. I figure that the other features granted in the subclass will be more than sufficient. I just felt it would've been appropriate for the theme. Thanks again for the input, I appreciate it. <3

Yeah, with actually magic weapons that have bonuses to attack and damage rolls it could go as high as +10 to attack on top of their normal attack modifier which could reach +12 all by itself normally. Now you’re looking at a +22 to hit.

As far as I know you cannot gain "expertise" in anything other than skill checks.
And tools too, the Artificer has that. At least in 5e'14 at any rate.
