Hey guys, so I'm thinking of drawing up a character and obviously, I need to run this past my DM first, but I want him to use a pickaxe one-handed. Possibly have it replace the hand depending on the backstory, still undecided. Seeing as how there is no pickaxe weapon/ damage for it, at least that I could find, I'm going to have to homebrew. I'd like to take a poll for the Damage should it be 1d6 piercing or 1d4 piercing? Also, if there is any confusion the character backstory would incorporate mining...A LOT... so it will be a strength based character.

There is the Warpick. It's a one handed martial melee weapon that deals 1d8. Which I personally feel is underpowered and should have Versatile, and should be like: warhammer, longsword, and battleaxe. Instead it's 1d8 with no special property and I can't see a good reason other then a waste of design space.
That said I agree with Matthias. Either make it a 1d8 one handed or 1d6 and light and finesse (it's a shortsword with a different skin). If you don't want to make it finesse, maybe give it Advantage on Athletics checks to climb as a "special property". This is if you want something more like an "ice climbing pick".

Agreed with both above. For weapons I think the reskinning of another weapon is the easiest way to go, simply because what we have pretty much covers the spectrum of what you'll need outside of specific edge cases. Things like the morningstar, shortsword, or war pick that was already mentioned would all suffice as martial weapons, and even the mace or handaxe for simple weapons work. I'd say first see what your DM says, especially if you want it to be attached to your character.
I agree with it should have the versatility property being 1d8/1d10 or going with the following, 1d6/1d8 Light,Versatile being it weighs 2 pounds it is light as in actual weight. But as the weapon is used I would never give it Finese property, just look at the Hand Axe.
All of these are great guys thank you!!! I guess I'm just blind about the warpick lol. I supposed I also lowballed the damage quite a bit I just have never made any changes aesthetically, or mechanically so I didn't want my first idea to come off as me trying to powerhouse haha.

I suggest a simple melee weapon that does 1d6 piercing damage and has the light property.
