See title. If I make a copy of a +1 longsword and put that on a character, it works as it should. The moment I change its description, however, the +1 modifier stops working, even though I didn't change any other properties than the description. None of the modifiers are changed.

The item has been set to require attunement. Did your character attune to the weapon?
