Honestly been enjoying my previous posts and discussion about adapting ideas into homebrew but I'm interested in what others may think about adapting ideas from other properties into D&D/Tabletop. The idea that spurned this for me is the Perk-a-Colas from Call of Duty Zombies. I'm a huge Zombies fan (Treyarch maps, the others aren't as strong) and one of the key mechanics is Perk-a-Colas, items you could buy that added benefits to the player until they were downed. This included:
- Doubling your maximum HP
- Double fire rate and double attack damage
- Increased weapon capacity
- Summoning a wolf companion to fight for you
- Immunity to falling and explosive (fire) damage, and being able to generate explosions from movement
- Web grenades that auto-activated when you are hit by melee
And SO MUCH MORE (not including custom stuff the community made). My idea for possibly making D&D versions of these would be as potions that lasted until either a long rest/knocked unconscious (in line with the originals) or limiting the time they are active even further to a few hours.
But my main point is this. How would you try adapting ideas from other systems into D&D or anything else, what would work or not, what have you tried before, etc? (Also, if someone smarter than me has any experience with making homebrew items, maybe give Perk-a-Colas a shot, I can barely wrap my head around some of the homebrew systems here. If not, I'll try something if I get the chance).
