Wanted to put the idea out there of a Homebrew Rule I was considering. Temporary Hit Point (THP) Refreshing.
While THPs don't stack, there are certain class abilities or spells that have additional effects "while you have these hit points". My rule would allow these effects to remain until the duration ends or as long as you have a pool of THPs. As soon as it hits 0, the effects end.
For instance, if you had 10 THP from a 2nd level Armor of Agathys and were granted 4 THP by Heroism, you would still have only 10; if you had been reduced to 3 THP, however, you would now have 4 and the additional damage from AoA is still in effect.
I don't think it would be too game-breaking. Keeping up this pool still takes resources (spells, actions, etc.) and could promote more teamwork. Also, most sources of THPs are pretty small values.
