With the release of The Book of Many Things, I decided one night to humor myself at the multitude of homebrewed versions and alterations of The Deck of Many Things, and it got me thinking of something just completely out of the blue:
What if, just for kicks, there was a way you could make a Deck based off of the physical descriptions and card effects of actual MTG trading cards?
Here are a few silly ideas I've come up with (anything in italics are side-notes): Chalice (based off of "Chalice of the Void"): The card disappears, and in its place, you are given a golden chalice with 1d4 charges. As an action, you can expend a charge to cast Counterspell at a level equal to the spell you are countering. After all of this chalice's charges are used, the item vanishes in a puff of black smoke. (Given the look and operation of the MTG card, this seems like a decent description.) Mox (based off of the "Mox" cards): The card disappears, and you immediately regain 1d10 spell slots. ("10" being the number of official, non-online Mox cards, I think? Probably a way better description to put here, but I don't know MTG very much.) Will-force(?) (based off of "Force of Will"): Within 1 hour (maybe 1 minute? More? Less?) of drawing this card, you can spend a number of hit points equal to half your maximum possible hit points along with this card to cast Counterspell at 9th level. If spending this many health points would cause you to drop to 0 health points, you instantly die and cannot be revived. (Given the cost for some of the MTG cards, it would only make sense to pass on some its costs as consequences for the Deck, hm?) Null (based off of "Null Rod"): Any magical artifact(s) in your possession is/are rendered useless to you and your touch. Only a Wish spell or the power of the gods can remove this curse. (Teehee...) Time (based off of "Time Vault"): You are cursed by the "hiccup" of time. While in combat, when it is your turn in initiative, you may make an additional turn. However, when you do so, the next time it is your turn, that turn is skipped. While outside of combat, there is a 50% chance (by DM's discretion) you disappear and then reappear 6 seconds later. Only a Wish spell or the power of the gods can remove this curse. (Could lead to some funny roleplaying, especially in important circumstances.) Moon (based off of "Blood Moon"): The card flies directly into one of your eyes (flip a coin, left eye for heads and right eye for tails), which excruciatingly transforms it into a demonic eye. Anyone who looks directly into that eye takes 10d6 fire damage. Any PCs, members of a royal family, and celestials are immune to this effect. Only those who bend at one knee towards you before looking at your eye will gain this immunity to the eye's effect. (I based this one off of the MTG card's quote on the bottom. Gives that PC a reason to wear an eyepatch, I suppose. Can't think of a hefty drawback for this one...) Rose (based off of "Thorn of the Black Rose"): The card turns into a lengthy, well-worded deed to a castle far off from you, stating that you have not only ownership of the castle, but have dominion over its surrounding domain. The castle and its grounds, however, are infested with monsters, as well as a very powerful entity, that must be defeated before you can claim it as your own. (Based this on off of both the MTG card and the Deck of Many Things' "Throne" card.) Termination (based off of the "Terminate" card): Within 1 month (Week? Day? Year?) of drawing this card, you may use its one and only charge to cast Disintegrate. The card then disappears. Loyalty (based off of "Virtue of Loyalty"): You gain the service of a 4th-level paladin who appears in a space you choose within 30 feet of you. The paladin serves loyally to you and your party members until death. Any ally within 30 ft. of the paladin gains a +1 to attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. You control this character. (Basically a copy-paste of the DoMT's "Knight" card, with some adjustments made based off the MTG card.)
Now obviously there are many, many MTG cards, plenty of which could belong in this so called "deck." And yes, obviously there should be a card that references the infamous Black Lotus, but I have no idea what sort of power that card should wield.
What are your thoughts on this? Any other ideas for this, or perhaps any adjustments that could/should be made to the 9 card ideas I've made?
(also yes i'm sorry this post is lengthy, it's my first time posting a thread on the forums here)
