The latest Unearthed Arcana is out, giving us a D&D 2024 version of the Artificer. Many have their own opinions on the class & more then a few concerns. For those who find this version lacking, I offer this thread to share ideas for new features, even if it is just a concept for one. Offer POLITE feed back for others ideas. As an example & to start things off, like to purpose an additional feature for level 2 artificers. I call it "Extension of Yourself".
Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of one kind of weapon of your choice with which you have proficiency, such as Light Hammer. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change the kinds of weapon you chose. For example, you could switch to using the mastery properties of Light Crossbow.
In addition, you can attempt to gain temporary mastery over weapons who's magic you are personally connected to via attunement or is one of your replicated magic items. During a long rest, you may make a number of Intelligence (Arcana) checks, up to your PB per long rest, to gain this temporary mastery. The DC = Item's rarity value = 3X rarity tier + 10 (common = 13, rare = 19, legendary 25 etc.). If you fail a check to gain temporary mastery with a weapon, you can use another attempt to retry, but the the DC increase by 2 per failed attempt with that weapon this long rest. Temporary mastery last until your next long rest, at which time you can attempt to renew it with the DC reduced by 5. If the weapon is both a replicate item & attuned , the Arcana check is made at advantage. Temporary mastery only applies to the individual weapon, not a the weapon type. Ex. Temporary Mastery with a replicated Moon-Touched Dagger will not carry over to mundane daggers, +1 daggers or even other replicated Moon-Touched Daggers.
It really irked me that while Martial Classes (except Monk) & the other Half-Casters gained the new Weapon Mastery feature, the artificer didn't. I get that artificers lean more toward casters than other half-casters, evident in the fact that while calculating multiclassing spell slots, you add 1/2 your artificer level rounded UP instead of down like rangers & paladin. Which is why they only gain 1 standard Weapon Mastery while all other classes with the feature get at least 2. However, the class that is most associated with item use still needs a little more then that, so I gave them the POTENTIAL to rival Fighters in Weapon Masteries. The fact that temporary masteries can only be done with magic weapons is just a much for fitting the artificer theme as for class balance.
So tell me your thoughts on "Extension of Yourself" & share your own homebrew features for Artificers & their Subclasses.
I have heard your feed back & have now give you a newer, simplified version. I give you "Extension of Yourself(Revised)".
Your understanding & training with magical weapons allows you to use the mastery properties for a number of weapons = 1/2 your PB (rounded down). The first weapon mastery can be with any magical weapon of a chosen weapon type you are proficient with, such as Dragon Slayer or Giant Slayer Light Hammers. you can learn mastery over any magic weapons who's magic you are personally connected to via attunement or is one of your replicated magic items. These weapon masteries only applies to the individual weapon, not a the weapon type. Ex. a replicated Flame Tongue Sword or Dagger will not carry over to mundane swords or daggers, +1 swords or daggers or even other replicated Flame Tongue swords or daggers. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change which weapons you have mastery over. For example, you could switch to using the mastery properties of Repeating Shot Light Crossbow & Ironfang.
So, what do you think? No more rolls, but keeps the first version's spirits. The number of weapon masteries was reduced 1/2 PB to keep the balance since you don't have to make a check for them.
Thank you for your feedback. I have a revised, simplified version of "Extension of Yourself". You can limit it to certain subclasses if you want. (though, please consider that the current "Armorer" UA is a little overpowered as it is?)

Overly complicated, Weapon Mastery is annoying enough to keep track of without having to roll a bunch of dice every long rest.
I think that Weapon Masteries and fighting styles should be limited to the Battle Smith and Armorer.
And I think this is overly complex.
