My friends and I haven't ever played DnD and we can't find anyone who does, we've all watched our fair share of DnD stuff and read most the rules but we've come to an idea for a different stats system, not trying to make this not DnD but I still wanted it to be a homebrew type. We have a fallout type of stats where you divide your stat points and a level 1 character will have 20 points. Also the fighting is stacked so its a +X or +Y if that makes sense, but a 1 is still a critical fail and they have to roll a d6 and if you get a 6 you get 2 times the damage you would had dealt. Is this still DnD though?
There is already a point buy system in dnd. the rules
I'm not sure what you mean about the +X and Y. In dnd you already add numbers to your rolls. Also, rather than rolling a separate d6 for crits, they already happen if you roll a 20.
