Hey all, its been quite a while since I posted a few rather shoddy homebrew subclasses that I was trying to create. Well, I’m back with another that I figured I’d share incase anyone was interested.
I do want to note, this subclass is probably at least a bit overpowered (if not very overpowered). However, this was always meant to be a NPC subclass that could be unlocked to a PC for story reasons, so I’m not as worried about its power scale. Plus my group tends to play more optimally and with powerful homebrew monsters, so it isn’t as big of a deal for us as I’m sure it would be for others.
Still, let me know what you guys think.
Path of the Bloodscaled Fury
An angry dragon is fearsome indeed. A dragon in a frothing rage, with its eyes shot red, great gobbets of spittle foaming from its mouth, and a sheen of blood coating its scales, is a terror few can withstand. A Bloodscaled Fury is a dragon whose rage surpasses that of a human barbarian, just as the barbarian's rage surpasses a child's tantrum.
When a Bloodscaled Fury enters a rage, small bits of their draconic blood ooze from between their scales. For some, the blood lines the edges of each scale, giving the whole hide an eerie red hue. Other times the blood forms draconic runes of protection and power over the scales. Sometimes, the whole body becomes coated in a layer of congealing blood, providing a truly horrific sight. Regardless of the appearance the blood rage takes, they are a terrifying force of nature and destruction.
Normally, only true dragons have the capacity to unlock the rage of the Bloodscaled Fury. Occasionally however, those with a strong connection to their draconic blood or empowered by a true dragon or dragon deity in some way may be able to access this powerful rage state, making them a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Blood Rage
At 3rd level, you acquire the power that is your Path’s namesake. When you enter your barbarian rage, you gain the following benefits:
You gain a +1 to your AC and your speed increases by 10 feet.
Your bonus rage damage increases by an amount equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1).
When you take damage from attacks that deal bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, you may further reduce the damage you would be dealt by an amount equal to your Con mod (applied after your rage resistance).
Sanguine Imbuement
At 6th level, you are able to sacrifice some of your life force to strike down your foes with greater ferocity. Once per turn while raging when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, unarmed strike, or a breath weapon if applicable, you may sacrifice one of your Hit Die to add 1d12 + your barbarian level to the damage dealt. The damage type is the same as the initial attack.
Protective Vitality
Starting at 6th level, your Blood Rage grows in power and gains greater defensive properties. While raging, you gain a bonus to all saving throws equal to your Con mod (minimum of 1).
Additionally when you take damage while raging, you may use your reaction to grant yourself resistance to that damage type for 10 minutes. You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Adrenaline Rush
At 10th level, you can activate a heightened state while raging that greatly enhances your speed and reflexes. When you activate your rage, or as a bonus action while already raging, you may choose to further enhance it, gaining the following benefits.
Your speed is doubled and you can take the Dash action as a bonus action.
Gain an additional +2 to AC
When you take the Attack action, you may make one additional attack during it.
This enhanced rage state lasts for 1 minute, It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or you choose to end it as a bonus action. Once you use this feature, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend 4 Hit Die to use it again.
Greater Recovery
Starting at 10th level, your ability to regenerate your life blood increases. During a short rest, when you would use Hit Die to recover hp, you may forgo rolling and use the max for your Hit Die instead. Also, during a long rest, you recover all expended Hit Die instead of half your level’s worth.
Warding Blood Rage
At 14th level, your blood rage can lessen the harm caused by some of the most devastating attacks. While you are raging, you gain resistance to damage from spells and the breath weapons of dragons and draconic creatures. Other magical effects, or breath weapons from creatures not of the Dragon creature type are not applicable for this resistance.
Blood Churning Strike
Starting at 14th level, you gain the ability to demoralize your enemies by dealing with them harshly, ensuring that they know your power just as lesser beings know the power of true dragons. Whenever you slay or incapacitate an opponent (by reducing him to 0 or kill them outright), you can force each creature of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier) with a -1 penalty for each creature you've slain or incapacitated this combat. On a failed save, a creature becomes frightened of you for 1 minute. The frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns (still adding the penalty for each slain creature), ending the effect on itself on a success.
While a creature is frightened this way, you can use your Sanguine Imbuement subclass feature against them without using a Hit Die, and are not limited to using the feature against such targets once a turn.
