I have an idea for an artifact. And I kinda wanna use it in my campaign if I get the chance. It's a mirror book. A book that is written about the person who probably attuned to it. It will tell something about the future but and the like. But it could be wrong or it's always right I dunno. Just need some tips. Sorry it's very little to go on. Thanks in advance.
I think it's a great idea! There is a bunch of ways to do it but here are some of the ways I would do it.
A way to do this is if you keep it vague, it's always true unless they actively try to change it, they get a small poem or paragraph that tells them about what is going to happen over the next couple of [Unit of time you choose], it's kinda like the effect Neon Nostrade have in Hunter x Hunter. Maybe make it so it's targeted and needs an activation, if they are about to go into a dungeon, they can activate it and the book will say something that will happen in the dungeon but the book can only be activated once a day or something.
Another way to do it is by making it so that every morning there's a new text in the book, like a fortune that will come true if your players do a specific thing that you [The DM] has in mind. This one is very open can be something good or bad, just don't tell the players what they have to do to make it happen, unless you make it so they can get a hint some way or another.
A third way is to make it active when they choose to activate it, you [The DM] rolls a D20 that the players don't see, you have three, four or five fortunes prepared for them, one that is 100% false, one that is 100% true and some that are leaning towards one or the other but are not 100%, the middle ones can be vague or contain some truth or lies depending on how you wanna do it, then you say that if the D20 is between this and that then this fortune is told, you can make it so they have bigger chance of getting the true one if you put a modifier on the roll but make sure that they don't roll the dice or see it, that would give it away which fortune it is.
You can do it in other ways too or combine some of the ways I would do it :) Hope you got some ideas from what I wrote or that someone else hits the idea you were thinking of.
Sorry for not seeing this before. Have been really busy. But this is an awesome idea! I think I might use this for a late game quest or something ^^ Thanks a lot man! ^^
