I am trying to set up a homebrew race for my wife to use. It is based on the Illithid as described here: https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Illithid_(5e_Race). I realize there is a very similar race already in the community section, but I am not a paid subscriber and can't add it to my collection. I don't play often enough to warrant subscribing, so that's not really an option for me.
The first issue is that there does not seem to be an option for choosing between WIS and CHA for the ability score increases. I got around this by allowing the player to choose from any of them, but that is not ideal. Hopefully they will just add that option one day.
I'm really struggling at figuring out how to add Mind Blast. I have added it as a racial trait which has an associated action (also called mind blast). For the most part, I think I have this figured out, but the range is really messing me up. It's a 15-foot radius centered on the player, so I have tried to set this as a spell action, spell range to self, area of effect to sphere, and area of effect size at 15. However, all I see on the character sheet when doing this is that the range is self. Here is the character I am building for reference: https://ddb.ac/characters/5613375/IKoGOj. What am I doing wrong?
This is the setup I have now. It now just says "self" for the range, but still does not show the AoE part :( I've also tried setting the attack range to "Ranged," but that just forces me to specify a range. Then it says 15 ft on the sheet instead of self with AoE details like it should. So not really an improvement.
I just replicated this but just changed the "attack range" box that is right under the "name" box. here is the link to the character. I think this is what you are wanting. The "range" box may light up, just ignore it and it should come out like this one.
Well, that changes the range to work properly, but now it's adding the INT modifier to the damage. It doesn't let me set the ability score type field to none to override that. To be honest, I don't understand why that is a required field at all. Even in official content there are attacks that modifiers don't apply to.
Edit: It also adds an attack bonus, which is wrong because it's an auto-hit with a save to reduce damage.

This is the race as I have currently created it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/races/62027-illithid.
It looks like from the sheet you linked to that the "Attack Range" (right under the name of the action) is set to melee.
That is the only thing I can think of if your range is self, area of effect is sphere and size 15

for the "test" ability on this character it says:
test character

I didn't notice that, the ability score type field even says "if applicable" as if it isn't a requirement. Seems like that could be a bug.
Edit: Even more odd is the fact that choosing a save type requires you to choose an ability score type
