The Artificer Class is one that I have been interested in including in my games for some time now. However, the Unearthed Arcana version presented has frankly been unacceptable to me personally. I've been working on a modified version for a month or two and I was interested in having some people look at it and potentially play it to give me some feedback are things I should take another look at. Changes:
Artificer was halfway between Eldritch Knight/Arcane Trickster Spellcasting and Paladin/Ranger Spellcasting. I settled it on the side of Paladin/Ranger Spellcasting as there is no Arcane Spellcaster equivalent.
Reoriented Feature and Spell Slot progression to more closely mirror the Classes in Player's Handbook.
Added details to features that I thought were unclear or open for abuse.
Removed automatically receiving Magic Items for leveling up and instead included some details about crafting.
Mechanical Servant became a Level 1 feature of a Mechanic Specialization.
On which note a third Specialization "Mechanic".
Changed the Alchemical Formula items to be acceptable as items craftable through normal means, while hopefully not depowering them too much.
The entire Gunsmith Specialization went through a lot of changes to make sure that the Thunder Cannon was not the be-all-end-all.
Concerns:
While I wanted to emphasize crafting as a Roll Playing thing and not something that just happens, the Artificer is so focused around it that I fear that several changes can cause it to be unplayable in some campaigns. I am most worried about the Alchemist Subclass, which is why I doubled it's instant crafting times, but that may not be enough.
The Mechanic Specialization in general, as I had no basis other than the Mechanical Servant to go off of.
The Spells that I selected for the Artificer. While several seemed thematic, I noticed that in any building practice for an Artificer that I ended up choosing the same Spells repeatedly.
