I am in the process of writing my Homebrew Campaign. I had an idea for a lower level encounter that would be repeated later on at a higher level, but would get the players used to this type of encounter. It is a wave based encounter, basically a tower defense/zombie mode. I am trying to work out how to balance the encounter for lower levels where the zombies die quickly, in maybe 1 or 2 hits, so I can have 15 or so coming at once without the PC dying. For the low and high level I plan to have it outside a city or town for the low level and a castle for the high level, so the town guards will be helping fight them off. I am mostly focused on the low level. Here is my plan for it.
I am thinking of just using the Zombie template but lowering the hitpoints to half of what it is normally, so 10 or 11, and removing Undead Fortitude ability from them. I want the players killing hordes of zombies. The encounter will run for maybe 8 turns or whatever I deem challenging but not overwhelming. The end result is the players fight off hordes of zombies and just when it seems like they are out of spells and over run, I will have an NPC come in and save them. Kind of the "Hero" of the empire. This will be for the PC's when they are around level 1 or 2. The point is for when they are level 15-16 and they have to defend the castle against a slew of zombiefied creatures. They understand the mechanics and can better prepare, such as not using all their spell slots in the 1st wave.
I am looking for input on what I have as well as any ideas anyone has to balance and/or make this encounter fun and less repetitive.
