I had this crazy idea a couple nights ago while planning out my current DM project when I start to think up another Campaign down the road. (Like you do)
What if the players weren't any race or class but magically altered Oozes engineered to possess monsters and other races? Like, if they were the produces of a crazy wizard to be designed for war, but he dies by a sentient Black Pudding before anything happens. They have the choices to possess anything (upon succeeding their roll) and taking over the monster/animal/person's stat blocks and abilities and to basically play against the world. World vs Slimes. Adventurers will hunt them if they get too out of control in the Kingdom as they ARE dangerous beasts so there's plenty to fight on top of random beasts trying to eat them. They can even sneak into towns or cities if they want in various bodies.
I don't have an ultimate plan/destiny yet, but this is as far as I got. I'd love to hear feedback.
If you haven't heard of it before, Monsters! Monsters! would make a good reference for this type of homebrew system. It uses a system where the players have basic stats which get adjusted based on the monsters they decide to play as and features a decent list of monsters which could be with minimal effort adapted and expanded for dnd. If you want to know more or need help with adapting the rules feel free to ask and we can chat
All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.

If you haven't already done so, I would use the ghost's possession action to represent this.
