Class feature - I'm having problems trying to have it upcast the spell based on the class level (blue text below). This using the default spell Armor of Agathys.
This would not consume a spell slot, or known spell, and is limited 1 per long rest.
Rebounding Rage
Beginning at 4th level, while unarmored and in a rage you can initiate Armor of Agathys (as a bonus action) once per long rest. This protective magical force surrounds you, manifesting as a spectral force that covers you and your gear. You gain 5 temporary hit points for the duration. If a creature hits you with a melee attack while you have these hit points, the creature takes 5 force damage. This will increase to 10 points at 6th, 15 points at 8th, 20 points at 10th, and 30 points at 14th level.
The force damage will always be the initial point amount (i.e. 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30), occur in the same round as the attack, and occur as long as you have 1 or more temporary hit points remaining.
I did a work-around by creating Armor of Agathys as a cantrip, and leveled it. Ideally, i would like to know if this (Upcasting based on level) is possible within the sub-class features.
it is possible - I created my spells separately, and there is an option there that will allow you to use a modifiers and or Level scaling. play with that and you should have your answer.
