I was thinking of making a time magic based caster and was going to ask my DM if I could have a draconic bloodline sorcerer that had necrotic damage as the dragon colour, my DM tends to be receptive to reskins for mechanics as well as damage swaps, He let some one reskin a piercing rapier into a slashing cutlass but would this pose a balance problem because to the bonus damage to that damage type?
I consulted my damage type notes (yes I have notes). Necrotic has a very similar number of monsters that are resistant/immune to it as acid (which is an official draconic sorcerer type). Necrotic also has fewer and less accessible sorcerer spells than acid does. There is also the shadow dragon which has a necrotic breath weapon.
So in terms of both balance and lore, I give this homebrew (house rule? Whatever) a stamp of approval.
Thanks buddy, I wouldn't even get to the wings before multi-classing away from sorcerer as it's only the damage buff and the free mage armour I'm after.
How did you get the notes? was it when you've fought stuff or did you scour through the PHB and MM?
I scoured the monster compendium on DDB, and counted the number of monsters that are vulnerable, immune, and resist each damage type. Here is the chart I made:
I scoured the monster compendium on DDB, and counted the number of monsters that are vulnerable, immune, and resist each damage type. Here is the chart I made:
Immune/Resistant/Vulnerable/(Points 2I+R-V)
Poison 195/14/0/(404)
Fire 65/86/13/(203)
Cold 29/113/4/(167)
Lightning 25/84/0/(134)
Acid 24/32/0/(80)
Necrotic 23/30/0/(76)
Psychic 18/3/1/(38)
Thunder 4/23/2/(29)
Radiant 1/4/2/(4)
Force 1/0/0/(2)
That's some commitment. I was actually wondering if anybody had assembled a real dataset on the official monsters. I may ask one of my friends (I'm in grad school) to scrape the DDB pages to create one.

Lol. I just posted this chart on your thread before I seeing this comment.
This is one thing I love about nerdy communities.
