So I haven't been on for a while but I have been looking up things and found aside from boons there wasn't much out there about post level 20 games. And after a quick thread search I only found the one thread here about it. So for fun I thought I would try and come up with some possible rules that could be used for a long campaign that will possible go beyond level 20. I am sorry in advance if the wording is a bit off.
Max level 40 (I know some have gone above this, including one person in the thread I linked. But for the sake of brainstorming and balancing I picked level 40 for now)
Characters start at level 3 to both show some life experience before the campaign and becauseof the increased level cap.
Multiclassing is allowed but only into one other main class. For example Monk/Druid or Druid and Barbarian not all three.
When leveling a character beyond level 20 your stats can no longer be raised via points. Meaning if you multiclass after level 20 every level you would normally have the option of either a stat raise or feat. Becomes a feat choice by default.
When leveling a character beyond level 20 the player may also pick as second sub class from either one (if they have multiclassed) but only one. For example a Lore Bard with both Battlemaster and Samurai sub fighter classes.
The new subclass does not get a seperate level but instead merges into the already existing one. Using the fighter as an example again if the character above already has 20 in Battlemaster and 5 in Lore Bard and they want to gain a level in Samurai. Up the fighter level to 21 and pick the firtst class feature of the Samurai that is different from the Battlemaster. Then for evey new level added to the fighter class take the next feature or feat in the order you would have got them in normally through leveling.
Consider for the sake of higher levels and your sanity when dealing with sums to reduce the amount of exp needed by a either a quater or a half.
Every 5 levels above level 20 give the players the option of picking a boon instead out of the ones listed in the DM manual.
So any ideas to add to this, would this be too unbalanced or to restrictive? How crazy would you go with magic items as a DM or what would you try and do with your character as the player? Would you go for boons, a new sub class etc?
