Has anybody figured out any rhyme or reason as to why certain spells take attack rolls and others require saving throws? The differences I can find on a quick glance are
1. You can crit with a spell requiring an attack roll, and there are ways to get advantage with it, though cover becomes a thing.
2. You might be able to target a low save with a save spell, whereas AC is constant regardless of the mode of attack.
I would much rather have the spellcaster roll an attack than the target roll a save, but it looks like this would require changing 'Wisdom save' to 'attack the Wisdom defense (10+the target's wisdom save modifier), so maybe I should leave it sit. Thoughts?
best way that it came to me was, area dodge / mental / ability resistant (saving throws) vs aiming a spell (attack roll)...
Like one of the best example would be like fireball you throw it where it goes, and it explodes there, thus why it's a save vs attack... compared to fire bolt where its a smaller projectile spell that actually needs to hit where it goes, thus the attack role. Now with mental attacks, lets say charm person, your not aiming the spell just choosing who it effects, then they have to try to resist the spell's effect.
