One of the things I've always found infuriating about the 5e crafting system is the 8 consecutive hours system.
I mean, let's say I'm a woodworker who likes to widdle in my spare time. So whenever I'm sitting around, I pull out a small block of wood and start widdling myself little statues of animals. It's just something I do to pass the time, make little art objects, some I intend to give away, some I intend to sell. By the rules, unless I sit down for eight consecutive hours, nothing will ever get done on any project, but that's not only not realistic, it's counter intuitive to many crafting concepts and characters. Especially when many of them can't be done as part of a short rest, when crafting for many people is what they do precisely for the purpose of stress relief. I mean, let's say I'm a weaver, and I start weaving a blanket, and then at hour seven an emergency comes up and I need to deal with it. The blanket doesn't just magically unweave itself because I stopped one hour early.
What if I'm like many people in real life, who can't focus on one project, and are constantly jumping between projects, they still eventually get some done, even though they rarely can stay at one for more than a few hours.
Does anyone think there's anything wrong with making it 8 total hours before a progress roll is made, and not 8 consecutive hours? I think it would open up more rp, you might have a weaver crocheting a hat on a short rest, or a dwarf pulling out a piece of wood and widdling at it while the party camps leisurely. I also allows people to use their crafts and add to their characters even in games with little down time.
