So, I had this idea floating around of pseudo magical items. Not +1, or +2 items of the non-magical variety but items that enhance magic or abilities, but aren't inherently magical in and of themselves.
For example, take the spell, Toll the Dead, one of the Cleric's cantrip spells. Ironically enough, no bell is needed for this spell, but what if you had one made? Take the idea of the spell scrolls, the magical writings of a spell, and carve it into a bell, a sword, some item of your choosing. This item then contains the spell's magical writings for Toll the Dead.
But, instead that item burning up like a spell scroll, or using charges like some other magic items, what if instead, the Player needed to cast the spell?
In other word's, a spell focus, for that one spell.
I had a couple of ideas has to how to make something like that worth it for the player, but wanted to get people's opinions.
Some of the benefit's I've thought of would be shortened casting time, as the spell would already be sorta made by the object. Another would be an added damage die. Or you could do things like adding a + modifier to a save, or whatever you want.
With this, it would require some more specialization for each spell, since in theory, people could be casting spells in different ways, or focusing the item to enhance the spell in different ways.
The other benefit to the idea would be cost, since as you'd need the spell in the first place, it would let player's upgrade some of their spell's without getting true magic item's.
And for DM's, since they wouldn't be true magic item's, you can inflict things like rust on them or other damage if you feel they're abusing an item. As they wouldn't be magic, they wouldn't have the magical durability that comes with said items.
So, thoughts?
