after my last idea really flopped i was going to see if i could get help here with coming up with an idea. So my DM wants us all to present a personal homebrew item to get from a quest or event for ourselves and I am struggling to think of something i could have fun with since i love utility over raw numbers on anything.
My character is an Aasimar forge cleric who is unknowingly the son of Gond not knowing who his own mother and father are and was raised within the church of Gond and this adventure will be his first time away from the church experiencing the world.
I am trying to think of an item that would be cool and useful, anyone have any ideas? our DM plans to give the items based on the stats and what they do so no set level or anything to get the items until he looks at them.
What about something fun and simple, like the ability to summon a forge and anvil once a day or similar? (kind of like a thermal anvil from World of Warcraft for inspiration)
Or just go with maybe advantage when using smithing tools
Sounds like you ran into a similar situation that I did. Expect my character was a wizard tinkerer. So me and DM came to the conclusion of this item, Eyes of the Engineer. I know it's more focus to an engineer, but thought it could come in handy. My Dm plans on improving this item over time, but figured that this is a good start.
A traditional dream catcher strung with wire and embellished with gears. Once per day you can reach through the webbing and retrieve mechanical item dreamt up by yourself previously. This tool gives you advantage on one roll it's designed to aid with and then disappears.
You get to come up with weird contraptions to help with any situation.
Looks cool, not sure if it works though i have a little less than a week before session 0 but the item i have awhile to come up with. I like the idea of the item being part of him like i was also looking at the idea of an advanced form of mage hand as a prosthetic or something similar would be cool since he is chaotic good and does want to use craftsmanship to open up a prosperous future that accepts all craftsmen man and monster as long as they cooperate.
The dream catcher is a really cool idea would rather that for a tinkerer than a full on craftsmen since it reminds me more of WoW gnomes. I already plan to design a unique looking set of plate armor for him one idea i thought was interesting is someone designed a plate armor homebrew that stored itself into jewelry and would be conjured on activation for a fast change into gear.

I like the collapsible armor idea... it's a fun and interesting idea that's not too powerful for an early level game. It would also give you something to work on as a blacksmith... maybe it could start off the game with the stats of simple chain mail armor, but it gives your character something to work on whenever he has free time and access to supplies. Instead of simply buying new armor, you could instead have your character spend the equivalent cost of new armor on resources, then make a smithing check to make sure your fresh armor is still collapsible.
Hammer of Forging: This Smithing hammer allows the user to Identify forged objects by spending 10 minutes (the equivalence of a Ritual spell use). It also provides a +1 attack/damage bonus when used in combat. Finally, when used as a Forging Tool, it provides +1d4 to any Tool Check (equivalence of Guidance).
I don't think this would be too overpowering and would allow more use than just a +1 hammer. You wouldn't be able to Identify potions or cloaks, but armor and swords.
Okay, I was inspired by the concept of collapsible armor, so I've been working on a fairly simple homebrew. I'm not sure if it should require attunement or not... I'm not sure how powerful the ability to instantly don armor is, since pretty much every game I've ever been in kind of just treats everyone as though they're constantly wearing full armor at all times.
Armor can be collapsed and stored within these plain-looking Silver Bracers, which can be comfortably worn under most clothing.
Bracers of Collapsible Armor
Armor can be collapsed and stored within these plain-looking Silver Bracers, which can be comfortably worn under most clothing.
As an action, while wearing no other armor, you can speak the Bracers' command word, instantly donning the armor stored inside. After donning armor in this manner, you have advantage on any (Intimidation) checks for 1 minute against any creatures who saw you donning the armor in this manner.
While wearing the armor stored in the bracers, you can speak the command word to doff the armor. To do so you must remain still for 1 minute while the armor collapses and shrinks back into the bracers.
In order to store armor in the bracers, a creature with proficiency in either Smithing Tools or Tinkerer's Tools can attempt a 1 hour Dexterity check of DC 15 to attach the armor to the complicated mechanics and magical enchantments of the Bracers. Use of a forge or tinkerer's work bench reduces the DC of this skill check to 10. On a failure, the armor remains un-stored, and you suffer 1 point of exhaustion. Only one set of armor can be stored in this fashion, and storing a new set of armor places any previously stored armor in the nearest unoccupied space.
Thank you all for your inspiration i may run multiple things past the dm to get over time! I just finished my character and we are doing the first session today!
Haldiem Vel Bronzemeld - Aasimar Forge cleric - Worshiper of Gond - Orphan at birth raised by the church thinking that he is human - lv 1
He is a 6'1" lean young man 23 years old with messy thick long scarlet hair, tan skin, and emerald eyes. He has scars and burn marks on his hands and arms from training as an apprentice under the master craftsmen in the church all his life. He is a stern individual with a good since of humor, protective of those he cares about, and friendly to even the fiercest of beasts if they accept. He struggles with visions in his sleep of a land burning covered in blood with the sounds of screeching metal and the smell of sulfur in the air... he witnesses a knight land before him with flaming wings and eyes backed up by some individuals he can't quite make up fighting off a fire giant while a battle rages around them.
The reason he left the church is due to him believing these nightmares as visions from the gods since he was a small child and that he wishes to stop it at any cost.

Yeah was toying with that idea of an item to conjure a small cottage with a crafting area being an artifact of Gond the god he worships.
just like i am out of my comfort zone theme wise trying to come up with an idea lol first time cleric also.
