Thinking way ahead of myself here as the party hasn't even start CoS yet, but I like getting a run up if I can.
Loose idea so far - The Dark Powers are displeased with Strahd and have brought the characters to Barovia to take care of the arrogant vampire. Maybe the Dark Powers want the characters to rule over Barovia (but they're a good party, so will probably refuse). If they refuse, the Dark Powers realign Barovia with the Material Plane (Somehow, details blurry atm). There a sort of undead apocalypse occurs and the Forgotten Realms are plunged into a nightmare. The dark powers have taken hold of some of the original members of the Circle of Eight (dead or otherwise), and have turned them into Lichs, they now operate from Barovia (whatever form that might take, now a floating island?) and the party have to defeat the Circle of Eight, with Mordenkainen and other factions help, to banish Barovia back to it's demi-plane (or gone for good). Hopefully taking them to level 20+.
Just spit-balling here, any ideas that might improve this or even completely different?
