Im creating an encounter for my kids who are level 5, open hand monk, thief rogue, lore bard and beastmaster (new UA). As they head deeper into the lost temple they are about to come face to face with the three mages who kidnapped a local child.
The lead mage will go on ahead with the other two staying back to hold the party off. The intention was not to make these guys that strong, nor the leader. But in this battle one of these lieutenants will be Heavily tattooed. Ive started with the Lizardfolk Shaman as a base (although they are human) for CR and stats. Seems reasonable. But his main purpose is to release one of the (upto) 10 tattoos from his skin, fire hawk, constrictor snake, twin wolves, ape, centipede (using swarm stats), wasp, tiger, scorpion, bats (Im going to dice roll what he selects) although because of how i want to showcase things the snake comes first). I was thinking his last ditch defense could be one final back tattoo that casts polymorph on himself as a crocodile. And he will already have the fire hawk out.
Now depending on how many he gets out before they target him this could be easy or hard so i have toyed with a recharged idea to see whether he can go each round. If he only gets out 4 they should be fine. I've also been toying with the idea that he is himself weakened by letting a tattoo out.
What do you think of this encounter? got any advice or suggestions for the Tattooed Mage? The other lieutenant i am picking as either a support caster or a magically enhanced melee combatant (maybe a warlock). If things look bad i think he would retreat to aid their leader in the room beyond, leaving the Tattooed Mage behind.
I havent even begun to consider the leaders stats. Im not thinking he is that strong, also around the CR2 mark, maybe 3. The PCs should be fairly spent when they face off with him.
