Hey, I'm making a subclass based on the main character of a story I'm writing, and I've run into a couple roadblocks. The first is a bit of a balance issue, the second is an issue with the mechanics for homebrewing.
First, the mechanics issue: How do I make an ability cost a ki point so that they can use it in the character sheet? I've looked all over, but I am either missing it, or it is buried somewhere I didn't see.
The balance issue: One of the abilities I've added is called "Ki Burst," where the monk may spend 1 (2?) ki point(s) to move ten feet forward as a bonus action. If they use this ability and come into melee with an enemy, or if they use this ability to move through an enemy's square (They cannot land in the same square as the enemy, obviously, but they can move through it to get to the other side), they may make an attack as part of that bonus action. I'm trying to find a way to make this a happy medium between Step of the Wind and Flurry of Blows without losing the appeal of either. My thoughts are rolling it as a normal attack but without the dex bonus, but I'm not sure if that would be a good way to handle it. Any thoughts?
You could call it a rolling or jump kick or flying punch, lunging strike. If it's just about range you can add a reach to the attack ki wave punch blah blah.
Maybe a flicker effect, like empty body etheralness but 10ft and allows for an attack. Probably 2 ki for this one. Effect ends immediately after turn is over.
Don't really know the type of monk it is, EX: shadow drunken. Those themes help figure out a good idea for the mechanical delivery
Right, sorry, I guess that would help. This subclass of monk is actually based on the main character of a story I'm writing. This is a basic ability of her people, where they can use an energy called aura to enhance their fighting. One such ability is the aura burst, which sees an expulsion of aura from their backs to add distance to any kind of jump, which is why the monk would get propelled forward. It's basically just an enhanced jump that can be tagged onto the end of a monk's movement or used when in melee to quickly change
I will admit that I'm pretty new to homebrewing, so that's why I'm looking for ideas.
Sounds like you know what you want, you're just looking for a name. If enemies can take attacks of opportunities on your character, 1 ki. Otherwise, 2 if they cant. Or a mix of the 3 with lesser effects, +2 ac/10ft move/ and 1 unarmed strike for 2 points

Do creatures gain AOO against the monk?
