As a player, I've just started on my character's design and came up with an interesting character concept that can serve me well in case of permanent character death.
- A Tale of Three Brothers -
Three people, very different from one another (probably aasimar, elf, human), discover they share a number of things in common: they have been defeated by the same elusive powerful enemy and share the same patron. Through that supernatural patron, they forge a blood pact that can give them an increased chance for revenge. The pact combines their souls and bodies, expressing but one at a time until that person's death, at which point the dead individual becomes dormant and one of the other brothers takes over, the body becoming that individual's. For example, a dead human might be replaced with a living tiefling, with a dormant elf still in reserve. That way catharsis can be had by all, but living consecutive instead of parallel lives means they can greatly increase the chances of locating an enemy that is, say, ageless.
It's similar to the reincarnate spell, but is specifically thematic and part of the character's background.
I'm thinking of going with a supernatural gift (as in DMG's Chapter 7).
I want to include minimal benefits, hence the gift can be included in a character even at level 1. (Open for discussion!)
These benefits would include:
Your maximum lifespan becomes the mean amount of the combined maximum lifespans of the group's individuals, no matter your race.
The magic can provide a new body if the previous host no longer exists, in which case the new individual then appears in a safe unoccupied space closest to that body's last location.
As Tribe of One whenever you sleep you don't experience normal dreams as other creatures do. Instead, your mind draws from the memories and thoughts of the other souls while you sleep. (If you are elven you instead access these memories and thoughts when you meditate.) This may confer you clues as to people you should meet, things to say, places to go.
I had a day to think about it and yes it looks more like an RP arrangement with the DM, as long as it follows rules more related to narration than mechanics.

Ideas? Discuss.
They aren't really gifts, more RP and stuff. But the idea is cool. Maybe blood hunter character?
