My pal keeps complaining about how the 5e skill system is too limiting so I came up with a system and I'd like some feedback. Please let's not devolve into an argument about why my pal is wrong or why I shouldn't do this and let's just assume it's something my group wants to do.
The following system makes PCs more powerful in that their skills increase significantly above the regular rules. I get that. I just need to get any idea of how much and how quickly and what the cap would be. I want to pick your brains about this.
Here it is:
At 1st Level
Start with 4 skill points to spend Non-Proficient Skills - add up to 2 ranks to any one skill Proficient Skills - Add up to 4 ranks to any one skill
Gain 4 skill points Non-Proficient Skills - Add 1 rank to any one skill Proficient Skills - Add up to 3 ranks to any one skill that doesn’t already have assigned ranks; Add 1 rank to skills that already have ranks assigned
Any help appreciated! Thanks.

If you are trying to mirror it off of the older systems, I would say that "No skill can have a higher bonus than your current proficiency bonus" and I would give them 2 skill points at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th to reflect the same progress. You would also need to account for background proficiencies and class features such as the Rogue's Expertise or Knowledge Domain's Blessings of Knowledge (Maybe have those progress normally).
I have worked out a system that blends nonweapon proficiencies with 5e skills. I have accounted for things like Expertise and for Feats. I think it's pretty comprehensive and not as complicated as it first seems. You can find it here.

I hope that helps.

Completely agree with how borked 5e skill system is. It is almost painful to witness.
