Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online Experience: A few years Location/Timezone: Western Canada, Pacific Time Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights at 8pm PST Roles sought: Players- 3 to 5 Game style: See below:
Greetings (prospective) Adventurers:
I am a DM who has recently completed a year long level 1-10 D&D 5e homebrew campaign and am now looking for a new group of 3-5 players to begin again with. It will be a custom campaign setting, leaning heavily into classic high fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Critical Role, etc) with monsters, political intrigue and an open sandbox for you to explore and collectively tell a story in with D&D 5e as the rule set/inspiration. I will tailor the finer details of the setting to intertwine with your backstories as much as possible, so bring your character ideas! I am in western Canada, looking to play at 8pm Pacific on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays on a weekly basis. No previous experience is necessary, happy to accommodate any experience level. Ideally this campaign will be long term.
A bit about me and my table: I’m a 32 year old man, a lifelong fantasy nerd growing into his final form as a dorky dad (hence the late start time, have to play after my little one is in bed). I try to run a game that is tonally somewhere between Lord of the Rings and It’s Always Sunny in the Forgotten Realms, we can be both serious and irreverent. My games are 18+, LGBTQ+ friendly, and if you love stupid jokes, this might just be the place for you. My sense of humor is mostly just silly, however if the prospect of fighting a soulless and corrupt politician with a southern drawl named Lich McConnell is not your cup of tea, perhaps this is not the table for you. I like to stick to “Rule of Cool” within reason, deferring to rules as written when needed to keep the game structured and moving. I believe in giving my players the freedom to do as they please, with the understanding that with action comes consequence. I try to put emphasis on the narrative and story telling, and while I certainly want my player characters to feel powerful, aggressive min-maxing is not something I’m interested in (ie, unless you have a particularly compelling narrative reason why your character has dipped into 4 different classes by level 10, I ask that you keep the character optimization within reason). I want to give each and every player at the table a chance to shine, contribute and have fun without any 1 player being cartoonishly more powerful than the rest. I see the DM/Player relationship as collaborative, not adversarial, and run the game accordingly. I am not trying to “beat” you, rather I am trying to facilitate a story. I generally keep my games time divided around 40% roleplay, 40% combat and 20% exploration, but am 100% on board to adjust to what the table would like to do.
Table Mechanics: As D&D is a social game, I prefer to run a game off of video chat. I have found success using Google Meet as the platform, and if you are not comfortable being on camera you do not have to be and can just sign on for voice chat. I have a subscription, so it is free for my players and it can be run out of your web browser. I use a physical game map with webcam for battles to simulate the feel of playing in person, and it has worked very well. I create custom maps for set pieces using the Wilderness, Dungeon and Cities Reincarnated tile sets, and have a dry erase grid for “on the fly” encounters. I do also have Talespire, if the table prefers an entirely digital medium (I am a rookie with it though, would be a learning curve for all there). I use DnD Beyond to track character sheets, and can share all of my resources with the party. I use a few standard house rules, but am open to whatever the table wants to do and all will be discussed at session 0.
What I Provide:
• Free access to Google Meet platform
• Access to my D&D Beyond library, which includes Player’s Handbook, Volo’s, Tasha’s, Xanathar’s, Fizban’s, Elemental Evil, Sword Coast, and Van Richten’s
• World/local maps hand drawn in Inkarnate
• Battle Maps & Minis
• Full written recaps of each session the day after the game
• A judgement free zone. I do not tolerate shaming or judging at the table. Roleplay often requires a certain level of vulnerability, and everyone will be respectful of each other
• An open door. I’m always open to suggestions to improve the experience, feedback is always welcome and I keep lines of communication open
What I Ask of My Players:
• Be on time- we are all busy, and carving out game time is hard. Please be respectful and be ready at game time
• Be engaged
• Bring your enthusiasm
• If you can’t make a session, please give adequate notice
• Feedback- I want to build a game you will enjoy, your feedback helps me improve
What I Do Not Tolerate: • Bigotry • Judgemental attitudes (there is no “correct” way to play) • Main character syndrome (everyone can and will have a chance to shine) • No romantic advances on other characters/NPCs unless everyone is ok with it (and even then, keep it PG) • No murderhobos
