HALLOWEEN SEASON SPOOKY ADVENTURE WHERE THE PLAYERS ARE MONSTERS! BOO!
GM seeks players for an un-orthadox evil campaign where the players use monster stat-blocks instead of character sheets, growing in power and monster forms in a quest for power and territory in an underground mega-dungeon!
Campaign Title: HORRORS OF THE RED CATHEXIS!
Game Type: Starting with voice and Foundry VTT, possibly with PbP elements between sessions.
Theme & Style: High Fantasy--Horror--monster stat-blocks for characters--Homebrew--Campaign-short/mid term, may extend if desired--Drop In/Drop Out!
Brief Game Description: GAME DESCRIPTION Hidden from the eyes of the lands of men and elves, there are epics and heroes of evil as much as of good. This is one such story, behind the veil of the darkest planes, and behind the veil of broken ground in the deepest underdark -- this is the story of the Red Cathexis, and the horrors it issued like a cancer unseen beneath the surface of the world of Avecury. Ever wanted to play an evil campaign where the players are monsters?! This is it!
GM STYLE: I am a forever GM of decades that hopes to cater to the craves of my group, but this is obviously an evil campaign with unorthadox rules and a lot of homebrew to make it work. Characters use the Stat-Blocks of "Bodysnatched" monsters to explore and conquer various biomes in a mega-dungeon and climb the dungeon food-chain and hierarchy. I am a very descriptive GM that considers themselves flexible and looking to accomodate the wants and craves of a like-minded group of players who want to do something new and strange. I describe my GM style first and foremost as "Sandbox" -- that is, There are few if any rails in my world and the characters can go and do what they want without fear of "walking off script" -- the opposite of railroading. There will be allies and antagonists and goals in the world, but it will be up to the players to decide what characters to interact with and what goals to pursue. If characters explore and investigate there will always be various things to do -- but what to prioritize and where the story ultimately leads is up to the group!
Game duration will be based on interest and may have a drop-in/drop-out quality without harsh commitments, though I would like to see people interact with the game at least once a week. I'm thinking two (optional) sessions a week with PbP interactivity with the world in between those game times. Hopefully players can make at least one of the two sessions and Post some intermediate PbP activity between sessions, giving special attention and advancing individual goals.
Game System & Version: <Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2014)>
Schedule: Timezone EST. Wednesdays 9:30AM-12:30PM (morning) and Sundays 7PM-10PM (evening) -- you're not expected to make every game but if you can, go for it! There will also be PbP elements in between sessions. We WILL be having a session 0 to discuss how this campaign will run different from a regular 5e game. Monsters as characters/CR vs. Level character progression/ "Bodysnatching" monster forms as a core-mechanic/ etc. -- we'll have a session 0 where players propose and develop what kind of evil entities they are, personal goals and wants for the campaign, banned topics, etc.
Platforms: Foundry VTT and theater of the mind.
Number of Players: I envision starting with 4-6, depending on who can make Wed Morning Sessions and who can make Sunday Evening Sessions. Also if the drop-in/Drop-out aspect of the game is a thing, I might be on the prowl for additional players as the game goes on and old players fall off and new players fall in.
Character Starting Level:
Players start as evil entities only capable of possessing CR 1/2 creatures up to CR 1 (with greater difficulty) -- as the plot evolves and the evil entities gain more power, higher level creatures will be able to be controlled, so progression isn't really by "level" by really by the CR of the monster you possess and any magical gear you might collect.
Player Experience Level: I love new players as well as experienced ones... but warn newcomers that this is a non-traditional game that will not play like any other 5e game they are likely to experience so keep that in mind. I'd like to have at least one experienced player to help me guide newcomers and help me every now and again, maybe even somebody well versed in 2025 rules willing to teach me how we can start in 2014 and slowly transition into 2024 version as time goes on as I'd really like to learn the new version.
Thank you for your interest. Here's a bit more flavor text about the campaign below then feel free to respond to the thread or contact me on Discord under name
DETAILED CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION:
The fabric between the prime material plane and that of the darkest planes has weakened. The unimaginable and horrible beings of that place looked covetously upon this new world, and dangers so hideous the simple minds of mortals cannot comprehend them, quickly set to work on encroaching there --
However small the rift, a hole, a pore even - cunning beings set to realizing how they could jump the breach into this new morsel of a world. The beings that came forth were in diametric opposition to both nature and the gods of light, law, and order. As such, to simply cross the breach was impossible -- a being from the darkest planes would be rent from the world explosively as quickly as it arrived. Undeterred, the horrors of that dark place set to creating a device -- a vessel, that would enable at least a fragment of a being from the darkest realms to enter this world. That object came to be known as "The Red Cathexis" -- No larger than a grain of sand at first, and carrying merely a scintilla of the trueforms of the beings that rode within it -- it burst into existence deep underground, somewhere between and beneath the lands of elves, dwarves, and men -- and began to grow.
Nearly 100 years has passed, and the Cathexis -- now little larger than a fist, is finally large enough to open and release it's forbidding cargo into the underworld. The beings within, such as they are, cannot exist indefinitely outside of a native host, and to be seen as they truly are by light of day or without such cover from the sight of the gods would destroy them utterly. They had forseen this. They were bodysnatchers -- Hijackers of the minds and corpses of mortal beings, and they would use the forms of beings in the underworld to hide their nature, mitigate their relative weaknesses, and embrace their strength.
Their individual motives and goals are unclear, but to be certain they cannot bode well for any being on Avecury. All that is clear for now is that they are hungry, covetous, and malign -- The Cathexis has finally opened -- and they will offend this world, only hesitating in the face of their own destruction -- or the Cathexis they must protect if they are to maintain their ties to this world...
And so it began...
(Players don't make characters so much as dark personas that possess monsters in the underworld and use the creature stat-blocks to interact with the world and gain power, with the ultimate goal of taking over more and more of the dungeon and gaining more and more powerful monster forms. This is an evil campaign but players are expected to CO-OPERATE towards a common goal (protecting and growing the great Artifact that sustains them) as well as pursue their own goals.)
