Hello everyone! I am back once again to provide a new subclass option for Monk that has been brewing in my mind for a long time and I just recently got the mechanics in a decent enough state to be released, though I feel this one is a bit more of a work in progress than some of my other subclass options, so critique is appreciated! This subclass focuses around the pretty face archetype, such as dancers and performers and allows them to bend the Ki of others to both protect themselves and their compatriots. As such, this subclass is a good disruption option should stunning not work as well. This took some inspiration from the School of Enchantment wizard and the Way of Mercy monk (in how the first few features are structured and function mechanically).
Now, as usual, feel free to create a character and playtest this idea out, just be sure to give credit where its due and tell me how I can further make this subclass better or more balanced.
Way of Distraction (Name changed suggested by Kaboom979):
Bonus Proficiencies: When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with one musical instrument, the Performance skill, and one of the following skills of your choice: Athletics or Acrobatics.
Hypnotic Sway: Starting at 3rd level, whenever you take the Dodge action on your turn, you can spend 1 Ki point and target one creature that you can see within 10 ft of you. That target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your Ki save DC. On a failed save, the target is charmed by you until the end of your next turn or it takes any damage. While charmed in this way, the target cannot willingly move more than 30 ft from you and must maintain a direct line of sight on you. When you use your Patient Defense feature, you can use this feature without spending a Ki point to activate it.
Love-struck Touch: At 6th level, you do not end a creature's charmed condition by dealing damage to them with your monk weapons or unarmed strikes. Additionally, whenever you cause a creature to be affected by the charmed condition, you can spend 1 additional Ki point to have the target be affected by the Enthrall spell. This spell's effect lasts for the duration of the charm.
Retaliating Domination: At 11th level, when you are hit by an attack roll from a creature you can see, you can use your reaction to make a melee attack roll against the target. On a hit, the target is charmed by you until the beginning of your next turn.
Center of Attention: Starting at 17th level, your Hypnotic Sway feature has a range of 30 ft and can affect a number of creatures equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1). Additionally, whenever you cause a creature to be affected by the charmed condition, that creature cannot willingly move away from you.
This has some very interesting uses of the charmed condition and I like it overall. A few comments:
1) I would increased the cost on Love-Struck Touch for Enthrall to be 2 additional ki points, given that it is a second level spell.
2) I would consider reflavoring the subclass away from seduction. If your table is cool with it, then thats great, but if you are trying to appeal this subclass to the D&D community as a whole, I imagine you may run into the same issues the Peace Domain Cleric had (given that it was previously the Love Domain and Union Domain in UA but they moved to the flavor of "peace" instead to avoid connotations that characters are being forced into unwanted romantic bonds).
Edit: As an idea for reflavoring, maybe something like Way of Influence or Way of Distraction or something like that
So it says they are charmed unless you damage it (hypnotic sway). Does that mean your party can whale on the target all they like and they just take it? Then rinse, repeat since it lasts until the end of your next turn? Quite good for 3rd level. Like a mini stun except your 1st turn is spent dodging.
then you can bonus action patient defense and attack someone else while they are helpless (if they fail another save) while they party beats them up.
if that’s your idea of seduction, yikes lol. Just kidding. It is an interesting idea. Just wonder if it is too powerful.
@Kaboom979 Glad you enjoy the subclass as a whole! 1. I kept the Enthrall spell cost to 1 Ki, mostly due to the fact that its a rather situational spell and I fear that if its costs 2 Ki, not many people would even bother using it (At it stands, many people don't bother with Enthrall as is unless it fits with their specific character style, though granted, most don't think outside the box when applying it as its a situational spell). But I'll potentially change it should I get more feedback on that 2. I believe part of the reason why Love was such as strong stickler point was that its flavor text and its mechanical components where such different things that people were concerned it promoted certain unhealthy stereotypes. I tried to make sure the disconnect wasn't there but I like the Way of Distraction name so I will use that if you don't mind just to avoid any potentially huge backlash. Thanks for that!
@ThriKreenWarrior Hypnotic Sway is supposed to work in similar effects to other charm effects, to where if the creature takes damage the charm ends. But with the charmed condition, the charmed creature cannot target the charmer. Its not a stun where they can't attack anything, they just can't target the charmer with an attack or a harmful effect for the charm's duration, though I will change the wording to reflect what I meant, thank you for catching that.
With this subclass, aside from the distraction angle (I'll be changing that just to keep myself in the clear based on a previous comment) this subclass is more designed to be a disruptor first while keeping you safe with the Dodge action in the same breath.
